Colorado Legislature Indefinitely Suspends HB 24-1128

Feb 23, 2024 - 11:00am

Yesterday, HB 24-1128 was indefinitely suspended during a House State, Civic, Military, & Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing.

Sheriff Joe Roybal issued the following statement after testifying in support of this legislation on behalf of the County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC), the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and the concerned citizens of El Paso County:

“I am incredibly disappointed in the lack of support from our legislature for HB 24-1128. This legislation would have added another tool into the belt of law enforcement and helped us keep dangerous, violent criminals off our streets.

“As the duly elected Sheriff, I have been charged by the citizens of El Paso County to hold criminals accountable for their actions and reduce victims across our county.

“Although today did not go our way, I know many of my Colorado law enforcement counterparts are passionate about this issue and dedicated to keeping the public safe.

“I thank Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, CSOC, and the citizens of the Pikes Peak region for their support, and thank Representative Holtorf, Senator Baisley, for sponsoring this critical legislation. Additionally, I thank Representatives Brandi Bradley, Ken De Graaf, and Scott Bottoms for their votes of support and insightful questions during witness testimony.

“Colorado is my home. I am fully dedicated to preserving the safety and Constitutional rights of all who live here.”
