On December 30, 2022, at around forty minutes after midnight, an El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputy initiated a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle southbound on Powers Boulevard near Platte Avenue. This area is a jurisdictional boundary between the City of Colorado Springs and unincorporated El Paso County.
The vehicle immediately speed away from the deputy, continuing southbound on Powers Boulevard. The deputy did not pursue. The vehicle crashed a short distance later near Powers Boulevard's intersection with Airport Road in the City of Colorado Springs.
As deputies arrived in that area, they saw a man running from the scene and gave chase on foot. The man was contacted and, during deputies' efforts to restrain him, he punched a Sergeant on his face. After a brief struggle the man was taken into custody at which time a loaded handgun was discovered in a front pocket. There were no injuries resulting from the traffic crash nor the encounter with this man.
The man was identified as Nathan Craft, DOB: 10-4-1992. He was arrested and later booked into the El Paso County Jail with a $10,000 bond where he remains as of the writing of this media release for the Felony charges of Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer and Vehicular Eluding, a Misdemeanor charge of Prohibited Use of Weapons, and traffic infractions including Driving After Revocation, Reckless Driving, and Speeding.
