The El Paso County Criminal Justice Center has reached a critical point in managing the inmate population as it reached record highs today of 1592. The last record was set in August of this year with 1587 inmates. The female population of 332 is also close to reaching a record high. At this point, bed space is minimal with 5 female beds and 20 male beds available.
A moratorium on non-violent misdemeanor offenses not requiring incarceration has been in effect since August 29, 2006. These offenders have been and will continue to be served and released on summons.
Reduction measures will be assessed in the near future, as well as possible long term proposals to manage the continual and inevitable increase in the population.
