As the lead investigating agency, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office provides the following additional information to the original media release from the Colorado Springs Police Department:

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as 40-year-old Michael Hurst. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division continues to investigate this incident. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office in accordance with the Deadly Force Investigation Team policy. No further information will be released related to this investigation at this time.

Original release by CSPD on May 19, 2024

“On Saturday, May 18, at approximately 10:36 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a call for service regarding a suicidal male armed with a firearm in the 4200 block of Deerfield Hills Road. Before officers arrived on the scene, it was reported a shot was fired inside the residence. Other occupant(s) of the residence exited safely. When officers arrived on the scene, they attempted to check the welfare of the suspect, at which time additional shots were fired from within the residence into the surrounding neighborhood. Patrol officers requested tactical support. Before tactical support was able to respond, the suspect exited the front door of the residence with a firearm. Officers verbally engaged the suspect in an attempt to peacefully resolve the situation and commanded the suspect to drop the firearm. The suspect refused to obey commands. At that time, at least one officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect. Once it was safe to do so the officers rendered emergency medical aid and took the suspect into custody. The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. No officers or other community members were harmed during the incident.”
