On Saturday August 5, 2017, at 8:00 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the 2017 Region 14 United States Police Canine Associations Police Dog 1 Trials. The event will be held at the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Division building located at 3755 North Mark Dabling Boulevard.
The events that the canines and their handlers will be participating in include obedience, agility and aggression/apprehension work. The obedience is well known as the key to a good working dog and is a must in the law enforcement canine world. The agility tests the handler’s ability to guide their canine through an agility course and the canine’s ability to complete the course as required.
They will also participate in a box search in which a suspect is hiding in one of six boxes. The handler, who will not know which box the suspect is in, will deploy his canine to find the suspect.
Finally the canines and their handlers will work on aggression and apprehension work where the canine will be deployed to apprehend a fleeing suspect, always one of the most exciting portions of the trials.
Members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Cadet Program will also be out that day grilling brats, hot dogs and hamburgers with all proceeds from those sales will go directly to the Cadet Program to help facilitate the program throughout the year.
The El Paso County K-9 Unit will also be selling shirts for the event until we run out so come get yours fast! And finally, a three wheel chopper from the television show “Orange County Choppers” will be on display. Come out and take a look, no rides though, sorry!
For those who want to attend, please bring a chair as there are no bleachers. Restroom facilities are available on site.
We hope to see everyone out there and support not only our handlers from El Paso County but others from around the region.
