On June 27, 2019, at approximately 4:00 AM, a 57-year-old male in custody at the El Paso County Jail had a medical episode.  He was transported to the medical section for evaluation when his behavior became erratic and then self-harming. Deputies restrained the inmate in an attempt to reduce injuries to the male, where he then became unresponsive.

Lifesaving efforts were conducted both by in-house personnel and medical first responders.  They were unable to resuscitate the male and he was pronounced deceased at 4:33 AM. 

The involved deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with EPSO policy.

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) will be investigating this In-Custody Death. All information and updates will be provided by the CSPD Public Information Office.
