On Thursday, March 21, 2019, at approximately 2:15 PM, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by jail medical staff that an inmate tested positive for Hepatitis A. The inmate is currently incarcerated in the El Paso County Jail and has been since January 16, 2019.
We are working closely with El Paso County Public Health to vaccinate all inmates who may have come in contact with the infected inmate and need to be vaccinated. The inmate has also been placed in quarantine.
El Paso County Employee Benefits will provide vaccinations to all employees who may have been exposed to the infected inmate and need or want to be vaccinated.
The Health Department has advised us that if you have ever received a Hepatitis A vaccination or if you have ever had Hepatitis A you are considered immune for the rest of your life.
Unrelated to this incident, as a proactive measure on January 25, 2019, the medical provider at the El Paso County Jail began vaccinations of Hepatitis A for all inmates who are transient/homeless and drug users during the Intake process.
