Investigative Update on Officer Involved Shooting on Longfellow Drive

Apr 18, 2019 - 6:10am

On Monday April 15, 2019, at approximately 10:15 AM, units from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD)  responded to the 300 block of Longfellow Drive in response to an automobile theft in-progress/recovery.  A foot chase ensued, and a male was taken into custody related to the theft.

The investigation revealed a second possible male suspect was at large.  A black SUV was identified by area witnesses as possibly being associated to the automobile theft.  Officers contacted the potential suspect in the area, as a result of information developed which led them to believe he was connected to the motor vehicle theft.

Contact was made with the potential suspect and his behavior became evasive and erratic.  At approximately 11:50 AM, a single shot was fired by an officer with (CSPD).  No one was injured, and the potential suspect has not been criminally charged in this incident.

The officer involved has been placed on routine paid administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.

When an officer shoots and misses, these actions are not governed by Senate Bill 15-219. Instead, the arrangement for a Deadly Force Investigations Team response in these situations goes above and beyond the statutory requirements of Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, and is an agreement between the Colorado Springs Police Department, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office for transparency purposes.

We do not believe there is any threat to the community.  This is still an ongoing investigation and all updates will be only be provided by the Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer.
