On Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at approximately 4:00 AM Deputies responded to Avocet Loop and Tierra Drive in reference to Criminal Trespass Auto and Burglary calls. Victims reported an unknown number of suspects had broken into vehicles and used garage door openers to gain entrance into both residences. Garage door openers and five sets of vehicle keys were stolen.
Based on the similarity of the crimes, additional deputies were directed to respond to the area and search for possible suspects.
At approximately 4:36 AM, the Monument Police Department received a call for service on Woodmoor Acres Drive. The victims of this residence reported two vehicles had just been stolen. A blue Chevy Traverse and a black Jeep Compass were stolen. Deputies and Monument Police responded to the area.
At Struthers Road and North Gate Boulevard the vehicles stopped at the stop light and were prepared to turn west towards I-25. Based on the proximity of the vehicles, the suspect vehicles collided into each other when they attempted to evade a felony stop. No Sheriff’s Office vehicles were hit or damaged.
The Jeep headed south on I-25 and a pursuit ensued and then was terminated. The Traverse started to go onto the Air Force Academy. The suspect then drove up the Santa Fe Trail, crashed and fled on foot.
Air Force Security Forces assisted with containment and K-9 was paged out. The suspect was not located.
At approximately 9:00 AM, a male juvenile suspect was identified, located and taken into custody. Charges from multiple agencies are expected.
The investigation is still ongoing and we are still looking for a stolen 2016 black Jeep Compass bearing Colorado license plate WOQ-409. The vehicle has damage to the front resulting from the earlier collision. If you see this vehicle, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 719-390-5555.
