On Wednesday, April 6, 2016, the Sheriff's Office warned our community about a scam where the suspects were using the name of our Chief Deputy Todd Evans. The messages range from having warrants out for their arrest to civil judgments, in addition to owing the government money.
Since that press release we have had a staggering number of citizens who continue to be victimized by this scam.
If you receive a phone call from anyone claiming to be from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, PLEASE HANG UP IMMEDIATELY and call the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center at 719-390-5555.
These suspects will sound very convincing and have even set up a phone tree with numerical options to make it appear legitimate. They make you stay on the phone while your purchase the prepaid cards and ask you to give them the number off the back. Then they tell you to come to 27 E. Vermijo Avenue, which is the Sheriff's Office Headquarters to clear up the matter.
DO NOT FALL VICTIM... THIS IS A SCAM.
These suspects are also targeting the elderly population. We encourage everyone to educate and inform you family and friends about this scam.
Again, the Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens that our Office NEVER calls and informs individuals they have an active warrant and NEVER asks individuals to make payments to clear up a warrant. We will also NEVER call to ask for money, for any reason. We DO NOT collect money for any government agency.
