On March 2, 2016, at approximately 8:01 AM, The Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received multiple 911 telephone calls reporting that a small aircraft had crashed on the southeast end of Palmer Lake and was on fire. Law enforcement and fire fighting personnel from the area responded to the scene and found that not only was the aircraft fully engulfed in flames but the surrounding brush was on fire as well.
First responders did an excellent job of containing and extinguishing the fire quickly. The ensuing fire consumed less than a quarter of an acre and never threatened any structures. Closer investigation revealed that the old fashioned Bi-plane was occupied by two deceased individuals.
The victims have been identified as 77 year old Dan Murray and 60 year old Jeff Kaplitz. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Murray and Mr. Kaplitz.
