On November 21st, 2024, at approximately 12:43 pm, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center received a phone call from an employee at Miami-Yoder Schools, stating a school security officer had a student detained after finding a handgun in the student's backpack.
El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the school and initiated an investigation.
Upon arrival, deputies secured the handgun and ensured the safety of the school building, students, and staff.
The student, a juvenile, had shown another student the weapon while riding the school bus home the previous day (November 20). After being notified, school security and staff searched the student’s locker and found the handgun in the student's backpack. The weapon was not loaded. The student was located, removed from class, and escorted to a secure location.
The student's parents were notified, and after their arrival at the school, and meeting with school administration, the student was released by school staff into their care.
Deputies responded to the 12-year-old student’s home address and met with them and their parents. They learned the student had found the unloaded weapon in the house before taking it to school.
The student was served and released on the following charges: Unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, Illegal Possession of a handgun by a juvenile, and Unlawfully carrying a weapon on school grounds.
