On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at about 0721 hours, the CSPD Communications Center received a 911 call indicating that a subject was in the area of Delta Drive and San Marcos Drive in the Sand Creek Division. The caller indicated that the subject, a 25 year old white male, was walking in the area and was holding a handgun in one hand and an alcoholic beverage in the other. Sand Creek Officers were dispatched and, upon arriving in the area, contacted this party.
During the contact, the subject pointed his weapon at the officer. The officer gave verbal commands for the subject to drop the weapon, which were not followed and the officer discharged his firearm striking the subject. He was subsequently transported to Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries.
As a result of Senate Bill 15-219, Concerning Measures to Provide Additional Transparency to Peace Officer-Involved Shootings, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office will be investigating the officer involved shooting. Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301 provides the statutory requirements for these investigations.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is in the early stages of the investigation and is conducting interviews and collecting evidence. Once the El Paso County Sheriff's Office completes the investigation into the officer involved shooting, it will be given to the District Attorney’s Office for review. The District Attorney’s Office will then provide their report based on Senate Bill 15-219
An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow, June 23rd. During this examination, the identity of the subject as well as cause and manner of death will be determined.
