On Monday, March 7, 2022, around 9:30 a.m., officers of the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) began an investigation into the whereabouts of a suspect wanted for attempted homicide out of Ripley, Mississippi.
Officers obtained information to the location of the suspect in Colorado Springs.
Officers located an adult male matching the description of the suspect in the 200 block of North Circle Drive. The suspect pointed a handgun and fired it at officers, at which time at least one officer returned fire, discharging their duty weapon at least one time.
The suspect fled the area and was contacted by additional officers in the 400 block of North Circle Drive, at which time the suspect pointed his firearm at officers. At least one officer fired at least one round from their duty weapon striking the suspect, who succumbed to his injuries on scene.
The suspect has been identified by the El Paso County Coroner's Office as 39 year-old, James Gregory.
All CSPD officers involved are uninjured and 4 have placed on administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as appropriate. All updates, with the exception of naming the involved officers, will come from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Public Information Office.
