Sep 21, 2016 - 10:51am

On Friday, September 16, 2016, at approximately 12:30 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) were preparing to execute a search warrant in the 5000 Block of Whip Trail.  The warrant was being executed in regards to an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office burglary investigation.

CSPD TEU officers responding to Whip Trail, observed a man they identified as Christopher Lee Liles, DOB 01/18/85, the suspect in the El Paso County Sheriff’s investigation. Liles fled the Whip Trail residence in a vehicle stolen from a burglary in El Paso County.  A pursuit ensued, ending when the suspect crashed and abandoned the stolen vehicle south of the intersection of Constitution and Murray. He then fled on foot.

At approximately, 4:23 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a 911 call from a male at a residence in the 2200 block of Lazy R Trail, reporting that someone tried to break into his garage.  The CSPD Communications Center then spoke with a female caller inside the Lazy R residence stating she was not safe and was not free to speak.

CSPD TEU officers responded to the Lazy R Trail address, to protect the residents and locate the suspect.  While searching the home the suspect was located in an attached garage and he attempted to flee in a vehicle by ramming through the garage door.  The suspect was shot and taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital, by ambulance, where he is being treated for his injuries. He remains in the custody of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Christopher Liles is being charged with Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, 2nd Degree Burglary, and 58 counts of Possession of a Forged Instrument.  Additional charges will be forthcoming related to the Officer Involved Shooting.

No CSPD or EPSO officers were injured. The officer involved in the shooting was placed on routine administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.

This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as the investigation allows.  The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is responsible for investigation of the CSPD Officer Involved Shooting. The Investigation will then be given to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
