On March 7, 2019, at approximately 9:14 a.m., deputies with the Rural Enforcement and Outreach Unit (REO) were dispatched to a house under construction, in the 24000 Block of East Hwy 24, to assist the Calhan Fire Department on a report of an explosion.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that drywall construction workers arrived on scene and when they opened the garage door to set up equipment, there was an explosion that engulfed the house in flames. Fire personnel was able to extinguish the fire without further threat to surrounding structures.
The investigation on scene revealed that a possible propane gas leak is believed to have ignited an unknown spark, causing an explosion. There were two workers transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. No arson or foul play is suspected.
