Sheriff's Office Assists in Cleanup of Hazardous Debris from Homeless Encampment

Mar 12, 2025 - 7:30am

On March 11, 2025, beginning at 8:00 a.m., the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) assisted the El Paso County Department of Public Works (DPW) with removing hazardous debris and trash from the homeless encampments under the overpass near Chamberlin South in unincorporated El Paso County.

Lieutenant Joshua Seiter and members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Unit supported DPW personnel as they addressed the site, which had been identified as a priority due to an upcoming bridge inspection.

“I am extremely pleased with the success of today’s cleanup operation,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “I thank our Department of Public Works partners and my EPSO Reserve Deputies for their planning and work to execute this important project. My Office continually focuses on protecting the property rights of individuals while balancing the need to serve those who are facing mental health issues, drug addiction, and homelessness in the Pikes Peak region. Today’s operation will allow the upcoming bridge inspection to be conducted safely and without delay and ensure hazardous materials are disposed of properly.”

Several DPW employees and heavy equipment operators facilitated the cleanup after the site was secured and cleared by the Sheriff’s Office deputies.

The area was previously posted with a notice to vacate last week. No illegal trespassers were encountered during the operation.

The debris removed from the location was enough to fill the back of one dump truck.
