On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at approximately 2:35 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an officer-involved shooting involving officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department The incident occurred near E. Colorado Ave. and S. Nevada Ave. in downtown Colorado Springs. As per Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at approximately 12:48 AM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Downtown Area Response Team (DART) on foot patrol observed an adult male holding a firearm outside of a business on S. Nevada Ave.
As the officers approached the suspect, he ran northbound on S. Nevada Ave. towards E. Pikes Peak Ave. CSPD officers started chasing the suspect, identifying themselves as police officers and ordering the suspect to drop the gun. During the foot chase, at least one CSPD officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect.
The suspect continued to run but was eventually taken into custody a short distance away in the 100 Block of E. Pikes Peak Ave. CSPD officers began rendering medical aid until medical personnel arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital. A firearm was located at the scene.
No other community members or officers were injured in this incident. One CSPD officer involved has been placed on administrative leave per CSPD policy.
This is an ongoing, active investigation, and all additional investigative information will be released from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
