On Thursday, February 27, 2020, at approximately 03:42 AM, an off-duty officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) called our Communication Center through the 9-1-1 phone line. The off-duty officer reported he was in the drive-through of a fast food restaurant, located at the 1000 block of Space Center Drive, when an unknown person broke into his vehicle and threatened him with a weapon. At least one round was fired by the off-duty officer at the unknown person.
Deputies arrived and performed life saving measures on an unknown male; however, he succumbed to his injuries while on scene.
The identity of the deceased will not be released until the Coroner's Office makes positive identification and the next of kin is notified.
The officer involved is uninjured and has been placed on routine administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy. This is the second Officer Involved Shooting involving CSPD in 2020. There is no known threat to the community regarding this incident.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer involved shooting. This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as the investigation allows.
