Sheriff's Office Message About COVID-19

Mar 18, 2020 - 9:55am

As the global COVID-19 information continues to develop, the Sheriff is working diligently in collaboration with El Paso County Public Health and other County leadership to prepare for the spread of COVID-19. The situation is rapidly evolving and being monitored closely. We continue to adhere to the guidelines and recommendations of El Paso County Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The health and safety of our employees and community members are of utmost importance.  At this time, the Sheriff’s Office will continue to uphold the laws of the jurisdiction, provide patrol, maintain security in our jail, and investigate local crimes.

Our deputies are trained to manage communicable diseases and protect themselves and the public. They have been provided with different types of protective equipment.  We have Standard Operating Procedures regarding disease prevention and response in the El Paso County Jail. We are coordinating with all law enforcement agencies in the area to keep them informed on our inmate admittance screening process.

As a proactive measure and in an effort to reduce face to face interactions for the time being, we are transitioning non-priority calls differently. Our Communication Center will still receive all requests for calls for service through our normal method, non-emergent calls to 719-390-5555 and emergent calls to 9-1-1.

Our Communication Center Call Takers will assess each situation as it comes in. If it is a crime that is actively occurring and is a risk to persons or property a deputy will be dispatched.  If it is an incident that is not active and not posing an immediate threat a deputy will reach the caller by phone.  If you do not have viable suspect description or location and you do not have physical evidence, you can report those crimes online at this link: https://bit.ly/3a59J0I

Effective immediately, our lobby services, at our downtown location, at 27 East Vermijo Avenue is closed to the public.  Lobby services at the El Paso County Jail, at 2739 East Las Vegas Street, will provide our jail bookkeeping desk and kiosk to the public, all other services will be closed. The El Paso County Jail Video Visitation building will be closed to the public, remote online visits are available at this link: http://bit.ly/33pkOre.

Our goal is to minimize public exposure to the virus while carrying out our mission to protect public safety in El Paso County.
