Colorado Puffer Awareness and Enforcement Week will begin on January 26, 2020 and run through February 1, 2020. Leaving your car running while unattended, known as Puffing, is illegal in Colorado with one exception; Colorado law does exempt vehicles with a remote-start from being ticketed if found running unattended.
Investigations show auto thefts cases are frequently connected to other crimes which put our community in danger to include armed robbery, identity theft, home invasion and drug-related offenses. Puffer Week is designed to help remind citizens not to take the unnecessary risk of puffing your car.
During Puffer Week, the Sheriff's Office will be increasing warnings and citations to those found puffing their cars, with the first offense costing $60.
Below are additional tips to help keep your car from being a target:
Never leave your car running unattended
Never leave valuables, keys, guns, money, ID's or garage door openers in your car
Park in an enclosed garage whenever possible
Always lock your car doors
Always park in well-lit areas
Invest in anti-theft technologies
