Original release by CSPD on 12/16/23:
“At approximately 4:04 AM Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department and Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to locate a suspected stolen vehicle that may have been used in other violent crimes earlier this morning in both jurisdictions. The vehicle was located in the 5900 block of Constitution Avenue. CSPD Officers and EPSO Deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to contact the suspect vehicle, who then fled. CSPD conducted a force stop method on the suspect vehicle and a male occupant exited while in possession of a handgun. At that time at least one CSPD officer shot at least one round striking the suspect in possession of the weapon. Officers provided emergency medical aid and the suspect was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. No other individuals were injured. Additional occupants of the vehicle fled on foot but were taken into custody a short distance away without incident. All suspects are accounted for and there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time.
The northwest entrance of the shopping center will be closed for the next several hours. Please avoid the area while the investigation takes place.
Pursuant to Colorado State Law, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the officer-involved shooting, and all other investigative updates will come from them.”
