The Sheriff's Office continues to receive calls about multiple scams geared toward the elderly population. One popular scam entails individuals calling and stating they are with Publisher's Clearing House, informing the victim they have won a large sum of money and ask they send a fee to receive their winnings.
The second scam involves individuals calling, claiming they are with the Internal Revenue Service, stating there is a criminal case pending against the victim. The caller is requesting they perform certain actions to clear up their criminal case.
The third scam is one we have seen a lot in the past where the caller identifies themselves as a Deputy from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. The suspect informs the victims they have active warrants for their arrest and need to report to the Sheriff's Office at 27 E. Vermijo Avenue to make a $1,000 payment to clear up the warrant.
The Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens to NEVER give personal information or money to someone over the phone. We ask that if you do receive phone calls of this nature, please call the El Paso County Sheriff's Office at 719-390-5555 to report this.
