The El Paso County Sheriff's Office announces a pending settlement was reached between El Paso County, Colorado, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and the Estate of Daniel Murray.
On July 4, 2022, Mr. Murray, an inmate at the El Paso County Jail, was found unresponsive in his cell. Deputies, jail medical staff, responders from American Medical Response (AMR), and the Colorado Springs Fire Department attempted lifesaving efforts. Unfortunately, these efforts were not successful.
The El Paso County Coroner ruled Mr. Murray died as a result of chronic alcohol abuse.
Under the terms of the settlement, the Estate of Mr. Murray will receive one million eight hundred seventy-five thousand dollars ($1,875,000). Berkley Public Entity/ Gemini Insurance Company, El Paso County's excess insurance carrier, will pay $1,375,000, and El Paso County will pay $500,000.
While this settlement has been approved by the Board of County Commissioners it will not become final until it is approved by the probate court.
Cassandra Sebastian, a Public Information Officer for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, issued the following statement:
"The El Paso County Sheriff's Office extends our condolences to Mr. Murray's family and friends. We hope this settlement provides the family an opportunity to continue their healing journey.”
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office will have no further comment on this settlement.
