On July 3, 2020, at approximately 12:19 PM, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail.  

A male inmate was found in his cell attempting suicide by hanging. Numerous deputies responded to the ward and assisted the inmate down. He was not breathing and had no pulse and life saving efforts began immediately.  The deputies initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and used the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) with the assistance of responding medical staff.  

Despite lifesaving efforts, the male was pronounced deceased on scene. The identity of the deceased male will not be released until the Coroner's Office makes positive identification and the next of kin is notified.  

This is an ongoing investigation and additional information will be released when it becomes available.

This is the fifth completed suicide at the El Paso County Jail since 2009.
