On April 3, 2023, Fugitive detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) located an adult male suspect they had been searching for who is known to have at least one felony warrant. The suspect was seen in a stolen vehicle. While conducting surveillance, the suspect met up with another vehicle which was occupied by four more individuals. This vehicle was also found to be stolen. The vehicles traveled to the Citadel Mall, where detectives continued surveillance of the five individuals on foot inside the mall. Through the detectives' previous investigation, it was likely the suspect may be armed. CSPD Tactical units were requested to respond to the area to apprehend the suspect.

At approximately 5:12 pm, as the five individuals exited the mall near the food court, tactical officers made contact. All five suspects fled on foot. Four of the individuals were immediately apprehended, while the main suspect fled towards Burlington Coat Factory. As officers were chasing the suspect, they observed he was in possession of a handgun. The suspect fled into the store, and the officers continued the pursuit inside.

Once inside the store, the suspect produced a handgun and fired at least one round.

Officers immediately provided medical aid to the suspect, identified as Brandon Harris, 19. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injury. Based on video evidence collected during the investigation, the death is being investigated as a suicide by self-inflicted means.

During the apprehension, at least one CSPD officer fired at least one round. 

Detectives from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

The Coroner's Office will determine the official cause and manner of death when all autopsy results are finalized.
