Suspect Sentenced in May 2023 B Street Early Morning Shooting

On October 15, 2024, Kevin Rued was found guilty of 1st Degree Murder.  Yesterday, Rued was sentenced to Life in Prison without the possibility of Parole.

“I thank my Investigations Division and the District Attorney’s Office for their persistence and dedication in holding this criminal accountable for his heinous, unjustifiable actions,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal.  “While nothing can bring back Sylena Maldonado, I hope her family may find some comfort in knowing justice has been served.  This outcome is a testament to our commitment to the citizens of El Paso County and to ensuring criminals who break the law, such as Kevin Rued, are held accountable.”

At approximately 3 am on Sunday, May 28th, an emergency 9-11 call came in to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a shots fired call in the 2000 block of B Street in unincorporated El Paso County in southern Colorado Springs. 

Upon arrival the female victim of a shooting was contacted and immediately transported to a local area hospital. Tragically, the victim succumbed to her injuries. Identification of the deceased female will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

El Paso County Detectives identified multiple scenes and quickly developed leads which helped them to identify a person of interest in the shooting. 

Kevin Rued, DOB 02/03/2000 was contacted by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team on Fay Drive in the Security-Widefield area and brought in for questioning without incident.

Rued was booked into the El Paso County jail on First Degree Murder (F1) and Felony Menacing (F5) and other related charges. 
This is an active investigation, and any additional information will be released from the El Paso County Sheriff’s office. There is no ongoing threat to the community.
