Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust and Illegal Firearm Seizure

Oct 16, 2024 - 10:40am

On October 14, 2024, at around 7:30 A.M., El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy Roberts was working a Colorado Department of Transportation High Visibility Traffic Grant near Constitution Avenue and Marksheffel Road in unincorporated El Paso County. Deputy Roberts observed a speeding vehicle with expired registration and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver, 44-year-old Osvaldo Luque-Camargo, had no insurance and was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver's license. During the stop, Deputy Roberts observed a firearm in the center console. When questioned about the vehicle and its registration, Luque-Camargo provided conflicting stories, raising further suspicion.

Deputy Roberts searched the vehicle after obtaining consent and found 380 grams of methamphetamine, a firearm with no serial number, drug distribution paraphernalia, multiple debit cards not issued to Osvaldo Luque-Camargo, over 100 gift cards, and ballistic body armor.

Luque-Camargo was arrested and transported to the El Paso County Jail. He is charged with Unlawful Possession for Distribution (DF1), Special Offender (DF1), Unlawful Possession of Financial Devices (F5), and several traffic violations.  He is being held on a $50,000 bond.

"Thanks to the vigilance and great cop work on behalf of Deputy Roberts, what started as a traffic stop led to the removal of dangerous drugs and an illegal firearm from our streets. My deputies are committed to keeping El Paso County safe, and this is a prime example of their dedication to protecting our community." — Sheriff Joseph Roybal.
