On Thursday, June 30, 2016, at approximately 3:27 PM, a trooper from the Colorado State Patrol and an officer from the Colorado Division of Wildlife contacted the occupants of an RV parked in the 4600 block of West US Highway 24.
A male and a female party were contacted in the RV and came outside. As the Trooper contacted the parties, she saw what appeared to be the components of a meth lab. The male party did not follow the Trooper’s commands and reentered the RV. The female party indicated she was a Concealed Weapons Permit holder and a firearm was present inside of the RV.
Other units from the Manitou Springs Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Department of Wildlife and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and set up containment around the RV. The Sheriff's Office SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Unit were called out and responded to the scene along with the Regional Bomb Squad and El Paso County and Colorado State Patrol HAZMAT.
After a short time and repeated commands the male party came out of the RV without incident.
The parties have been identified but since no criminal charges will be filed, their names will not be released.
The RV was searched by the Sheriff’s Office SWAT and then declared safe by the Colorado State Patrol HAZMAT.
