On Thursday, January 5, 2017, the Colorado Springs Police Department's Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) established surveillance in the 800 block of Chapman Drive in search of a juvenile male wanted on multiple violent crime felony warrants. At 3:00 PM, the officers encountered the armed suspect and shots were fired.
The juvenile male suspect is sixteen years old and still undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
At the time of the incident, the suspect was wanted by law enforcement on multiple warrants with charges including Second Degree Assault with a Weapon, Felony Menacing, Second Degree Burglary and various counts of Felony Theft.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statue 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer involved deadly force incident. The status of the Colorado Springs Police personnel who actively participated in the application of deadly force is in accordance with the current policies and procedures of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Detailed circumstances of the shooting are still a matter of current investigation and will not be released until the investigation is complete.
