Sheriff’s Office Releases Monthly Statistics on Sheriff Elder’s Top Priorities

In 2017, Sheriff Bill Elder laid out illegal marijuana enforcement, addressing mental health in the community and reducing the average daily jail population as his top priorities for the next four years of his administration.  The Sheriff’s Office will be releasing monthly statistics on the work that is being done to stop the diversion of legal marijuana to the illegal marijuana market, prevent the unnecessary incarceration of individuals with mental illness and the impact the jail population is having on inmate assaults on staff and other inmates.

Clark In-Custody Death

This video is from the Medical Section at the El Paso County Jail on Friday, January 17, 2020 at approximately 9:18 PM.  Inmate Clark rushed deputies, as they attempted to switch out a defective safety smock.  A call for assistance was made over the radio, and several deputies responded to Medical and assisted in restraining Inmate Clark for his safety and the safety of the deputies.

Our goal in the Detention Bureau is to maintain a safe, secure environment for those incarcerated at the El Paso County Jail and the Metro Work Release Facility (MWRF). We strive to provide opportunities for inmates to obtain the necessary discipline, skills and therapy through a multi-systemic approach including substance abuse and anger management programs, progressive/regressive classification system, and the Reintegration and Recovery Program, to successfully return to their communities once released.

Inmate Visitation

Do I get to see the inmate? Can I bring anything in for the inmate?

All visits will be conducted over a video visitation system utilizing monitors and handsets. You will not see the inmate in person.

Medical Emergency Results in Inmate's Death

On September 25, 2021, at approximately 12:03 AM, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail. 

A man fell to the ground as he was making his way to the bathroom. Deputies and medical staff responded to the ward and helped the inmate sit up at which time he was conscious and breathing. Medical staff members and deputies remained with the inmate. 

I don’t see the inmate’s name in the list when I try to schedule a visit?

 If you cannot locate the correct inmate, the inmate may not yet be fully booked into the system or the inmate may have already been released from custody

Update: El Paso County Jail Inmate Found Deceased

On October 14, 2022, a female inmate in the El Paso County Jail died while in custody.

At around 10:22 p.m., the inmate was found unresponsive in her assigned cell. Life saving measures were initiated by Sheriff's Office personnel and medical staff until responders from American Medical Response (AMR) and responders from the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived and took over. Despite life saving measures, the inmate passed away. She was the sole occupant of the cell she was found in.

On October 14, 2022, a female inmate in the El Paso County Jail died while in custody.

At around 10:22 p.m., the inmate was found unresponsive in her assigned cell. Life saving measures were initiated by Sheriff's Office personnel and medical staff until responders from American Medical Response (AMR) and responders from the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived and took over. Despite life saving measures, the inmate passed away. She was the sole occupant of the cell she was found in. 

Inmate Identified in El Paso County Jail Death

On June 9, 2022, a female inmate in the El Paso County Jail died while in custody.

At around 4:26 p.m., the inmate was found unresponsive in her assigned cell. She was found hanging in her cell. She was the sole occupant of the cell. Life saving measures were initiated by Sheriff's Office personnel and medical staff until responders from American Medical Response (AMR) and responders from the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived and took over. Despite life saving measures, the inmate passed away.
