Inmate Who Dies from Fall Identified

On April 4, 2020, at approximately 9:55 AM, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail. 

A male inmate was walking to the restroom and fell, hitting his head. The Ward Deputy responded immediately to provide medical aid.  The male inmate was conscious and stated he felt dizzy right before he fell.

He was transported to the medical section where medical staff made the determination to dial 9-1-1.  He was transported to the hospital and later passed away.

Death at El Paso County Jail

On January 17, 2020, at approximately 9:50 PM, an inmate in the El Paso County Jail died while in custody.  The inmate was housed in the medical section at the time, and passed despite immediate life saving measures by deputies, medical staff and first responders.

The identity of the deceased male will not be released until the Coroner's Office makes positive identification and the next of kin is notified.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is assuming the investigation into the inmate’s death and will provide additional information as the investigation allows.

Detention Investigations Team

The El Paso County Jail has its own Detention Investigations Team. The Team consists of two full-time members and several part-time members. Team members conduct and assist in investigations of criminal activity within the facility, crimes technically occurring outside the facility but with ties to incarcerated inmates (such as restraining order violations by telephone or through inmate mail), and major incidents, such as in-custody deaths and suicide attempts.

Intake and Release

To ensure all Intake and Release responsibilities are accomplished in accordance with accepted professional standards and as prescribed in Colorado Revised Statue (C.R.S.) 17-26-103. In addition, Intake and Release maintains required records, ensures accountability and security of inmate funds and their personal property.

Detention Security Division

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Detention Bureau, Security Division is comprised of a group of approximatley 279 dedicated men and women who are proud of their ability to ensure inmates are housed in a safe, secure and constitutionally sound manner.

The men and women of the Security Division provide vital services to an approximate daily average jail population of over 1,600 inmates.

Inmate Death at the El Paso County Jail

On March 17, 2022, around 2:22 p.m., a female inmate in the El Paso County Jail died while in custody. The inmate was found unresponsive in her assigned cell. She passed despite life saving measures by on scene personnel, responders from American Medical Response (AMR) and responders from the Colorado Springs Fire Department. 

The identity of the deceased female will not be released until the Coroner's Office makes positive identification and the next of kin is notified.

Reduced Phone/Visitation Charges and Mail Information for the El Paso County Jail

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is reducing costs associated with phone calls and video visitation services at the El Paso County Jail.

Previously, calls were charged at a rate of .44 cents per minute for local calls and .60 cents per minute for long distance (domestic).

Effective July 25, 2021, all domestic calls, local or long distance (domestic), whether prepaid or collect will now be set at .12 cents per minute.
