Sheriff’s Office Awarded American Correctional Association Accreditation

Sheriff Elder is pleased to announce on Saturday, January 12, 2018, the Criminal Justice Center was awarded the American Correctional Association (ACA) Accreditation, at their conference in New Orleans, LA. The audit took place in October of 2018, and measures the Sheriff’s Office Detention Bureau’s ability to staff and maintain a detention facility that complies with ACA set standards and include:

• 60 mandatory standards and 324 non-mandatory standards

• Review of all policies, procedures, and practices

Criminal Justice Records / Body Worn Camera Video

The Records Section is responsible for data entry of all case reports, summons and complaints, parking citations, and FIRs (Field Interview Reports). This Section maintains case report files, collects all statistical data for monthly submission to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) via the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and answers all requests for records, to include case reports, arrest records, and dispatch records, whether in printed copy or video recordings of 911 calls.

Statement Regarding Settlement Agreement with the Estate of Mr. Daniel Murray

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office announces a pending settlement was reached between El Paso County, Colorado, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and the Estate of Daniel Murray.

On July 4, 2022, Mr. Murray, an inmate at the El Paso County Jail, was found unresponsive in his cell. Deputies, jail medical staff, responders from American Medical Response (AMR), and the Colorado Springs Fire Department attempted lifesaving efforts.  Unfortunately, these efforts were not successful.

The El Paso County Coroner ruled Mr. Murray died as a result of chronic alcohol abuse.

Statement Regarding Settlement Agreement with the Estate of Ms. Dezaree Archuleta

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office announces a settlement was reached between El Paso County, Colorado, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and the Estate of Dezaree Archuleta. 
 
On June 9, 2022, Ms. Archuleta, an inmate at the El Paso County Jail, was found unresponsive in her cell. Deputies, jail medical staff, responders from American Medical Response (AMR) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department attempted lifesaving efforts.  Unfortunately, these efforts were not successful.

Sheriff Roybal Announces New Medical Contract for El Paso County Jail

Today, Sheriff Joe Roybal announced a new contract with healthcare provider, VitalCore Health Strategies, to serve the incarcerated citizens at the El Paso County Jail. VitalCore replaces the previous provider, Wellpath, which provided services from January 1, 2020 - Dec 31, 2023.

Inmate Death at the El Paso County Jail

On September 4, 2023, a male inmate in the El Paso County Jail died while in custody.  At about 5:45 a.m., 42-year-old Jamin Robertson was housed in the medical unit and was found unresponsive and not breathing in his cell. 

Lifesaving measures were immediately initiated by medical staff until responders from the American Medical Response (AMR) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department took over medical care. Despite those measures, he passed away.

Statement Regarding Settlement Agreement with the Estate of Mr. William Johnson

Today, El Paso County Sheriff Joe Roybal announced a settlement was reached between El Paso County, Colorado, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and the Estate of William Johnson.

On September 27th, 2021, Mr. William Johnson, an inmate at the El Paso County Jail, was found unresponsive during a routine welfare check. Deputies and jail medical staff attempted lifesaving efforts, however, unfortunately, these efforts were not successful. 

More Staff Test Positive for COVID-19 at the El Paso County Jail

In the past 24 hours, 14 deputies have lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19. This brings the current total of infected employees to 16 this week. All employees and inmates who have had direct or indirect contact, or other work-related contact have been notified. Approximately 412 employees and 300 inmates have been tested this week.

In the past 24 hours two more deputies and eight inmates have lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19. The deputies and inmates have been isolated and all employees and inmates who have had direct or indirect contact, or other work-related contact have been contacted and/or notified.

The El Paso County Jail Lobby Closure

The El Paso County Jail Lobby Closure 

The El Paso County Jail, located at 2739 East Las Vegas Street, main lobby will be closed for remodeling beginning on August 19, 2020. This remodeling project is scheduled for completion on or about December 12, 2020. 

The project will include the remodel of the lobby and front desk area; this will increase the health, safety and overall efficiencies for all those who utilize the Jail. We have remained committed to providing excellent customer service and improving many of our processes.
