El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Makes Arrest in Road Rage Shooting

On December 11, 2024, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting near the Gate 5 entrance of Fort Carson and Highway 115 in unincorporated El Paso County.

The caller reported they were driving northbound on Highway 115 when another individual in a vehicle abruptly pulled in front of them and brake-checked their car. The suspect continued to drive his vehicle aggressively. Suddenly, the vehicle pulled alongside the victim’s vehicle, and the victim heard a loud bang.

A bullet had been fired through the door of the victim’s vehicle, narrowly missing him. The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle and entered through the gate at Fort Carson.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division assumed the investigation and identified the suspect vehicle and driver. The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Loyd Dewees. Sheriff’s Office detectives executed a search warrant, recovering evidence connected to the shooting.

On April 10, 2025, an arrest warrant was issued for Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, Felony Menacing, and Prohibited Use of a Weapon.

Today, Mr. Dewees turned himself in at the El Paso County Jail, where he is currently held on a $50,000 bond.

Mr. Dewees is employed by the Colorado Department of Corrections.
