This week, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office proudly celebrates National Correctional Officers Week, observed from May 4 through May 10, 2025.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, establishing “National Correctional Officers’ Week.” Each year, the first week of May is set aside to recognize the dedication of correctional officers and staff working in jails, prisons, and community corrections nationwide.
Four hundred fifty sworn and professional members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office serve in the Detention Bureau. Their responsibilities span from Court Services, Inmate Property, Intake and Release, Floor Security, and medical and mental health services, to name a few.
“The men and women working behind the walls of the El Paso County Jail demonstrate exceptional commitment, and I deeply respect their efforts,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “The Detention Bureau oversees the care and safety of roughly 1,200 incarcerated individuals, many of whom enter our facility facing serious physical or mental health challenges.
“My team delivers compassion, security, and support around the clock, every day of the year, ensuring those in our custody remain safe and have access to resources aimed at improving their overall well-being. I am deeply proud of their service and commitment, and I’m honored to celebrate this national week of recognition with them.”
