El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Dedicates Mounted Unit Barn to Deputy Larry J. Murphy

This week, El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal proudly dedicated the Mounted Unit Barn at Norris Penrose Event Center to Deputy Larry J. Murphy, honoring his decades of service, leadership, and commitment to the community. From this day forward, the facility will be known as the Deputy Larry J. Murphy Mounted Unit Barn.

Deputy Murphy has been a cornerstone of the Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit for nearly 30 years, playing an essential role in public safety, training, and community engagement. Embodying the true spirit of what it means to be a sheriff’s deputy, Larry Murphy has carried forward the traditions of western heritage while demonstrating professionalism and service to the citizens of the Pikes Peak region. Beyond El Paso County, he has shared his expertise by training mounted unit members across the United States, strengthening law enforcement capabilities nationwide.

Sheriff Roybal praised Murphy’s enduring impact, stating:

“Deputy Murphy’s dedication to this Office, our Mounted Unit, and the people of El Paso County is unmatched. His leadership and service have preserved the legacy of our western traditions while strengthening the future of law enforcement in our community. It is only fitting this barn carries his name.”

Sheriff Roybal added:

“Through rescue operations, missing person searches, and patrol support, Deputy Murphy has proven time and again why he is the backbone of our Mounted Unit. Larry has always led from the front, whether training new deputies, representing this Office at community events, or riding into the field when duty called. His name on this barn is more than recognition—it is a reminder of the standard he has set for all of us.”

The dedication ceremony featured remarks from Sheriff Roybal, representatives of the Mounted Unit, and community members who have worked alongside Deputy Murphy.

The event served as a celebration not only of Murphy’s career but also of the lasting influence he has had on advancing the Sheriff’s Office mission and strengthening community trust.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit, based at the Norris Penrose Event Center, plays a vital role in patrol operations, crowd management, rescue missions, and community outreach, continuing a long-standing western tradition Deputy Murphy has championed throughout his career.
