El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Honors Records Unit During Law Enforcement Records Personnel Week

Today, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office proudly celebrated Law Enforcement Records Personnel Week by recognizing the extensive and often unseen work performed by our Records Unit.

“Our Records Unit performs an extraordinary service to this Office and to the citizens of El Paso County,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “I am grateful for the members of this team, who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure every piece of information is accounted for, every document is in order, and every detail is checked and rechecked. Their work forms the foundation upon which every case is built.”

The Records Unit is responsible for a wide range of duties essential to both law enforcement and public service. These include receiving, processing, and maintaining all case reports submitted by deputies in the Law Enforcement, Administrative, and Detention Bureaus. The team prepares, edits, and transmits finalized reports to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution or continued investigation. They manage and safeguard an immense volume of data—ranging from body-worn camera footage, arrest records, and court-ordered documents to public records requests.

In addition to case management, Records personnel are responsible for accurately entering tickets and other critical information into state databases. Their responsibilities extend to processing court-ordered sealings and expungements, ensuring proper handling of sensitive records, and reporting crime statistics to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. They ensure these records are accessible to deputies, prosecutors, and other agencies which depend on accurate data to protect the public and uphold justice. Members of this unit also provide customer service to citizens seeking reports, background checks, and other official documents—balancing transparency with strict adherence to privacy laws and regulatory standards.

“Their work is tedious, detail-oriented, and absolutely vital to our ability to deliver quality service, build community trust, and maintain the integrity of our justice system,” added Sheriff Roybal. “Our Records professionals are the quiet strength behind our operations, and their precision and professionalism reflect the highest standards of our Office.”

Law Enforcement Records Personnel Week is observed statewide from November 2 through November 8, 2025, an annual recognition established by former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper in 2018. This week honors the indispensable contributions of records professionals across Colorado who ensure the accuracy, accountability, and transparency of every law enforcement agency’s operations.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to the dedicated members of the Records Unit for their unwavering commitment to excellence and their essential role in our mission to serve and protect the citizens of El Paso County.
