Sheriff’s Office Arrests Father Following Investigation into Abuse of Seven-Month-Old Twins

On April 24, 2026, at 7:33 PM, a call came into the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center regarding a suspected felony child abuse case involving seven-month-old twin infants. The reported abuse occurred at a residence in the 11000 block of Garrett Road in unincorporated El Paso County.

Medical staff at a local hospital determined both children had multiple fractures to their legs and ribs. These injuries were assessed as non-accidental in nature.

Detectives with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the hospital and assumed the lead role in the investigation.

The Department of Human Services took custody of the children.

A search warrant was subsequently executed at the family’s residence, and items of evidence were recovered.

On May 28, 2026, the children’s father, 19-year-old Samuel Maldonaldo Montano, was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on the following charges:

  • Two counts of Child Abuse
    • Two counts of 1st Degree Assault

Samuel Maldonaldo Montano was released on a $25,000 bond, the standard bond amount set by the state of Colorado for the associated charges.

“Anyone who abuses a child commits a betrayal of the most vulnerable members of our community,” warned El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “These crimes are reprehensible, and my Office has zero tolerance for anyone who inflicts harm on a child. We will use every resource available to identify offenders, build strong cases, and seek justice on behalf of victims. Let this serve as a warning: if you prey on children, we will find you, we will investigate relentlessly, and we will not rest until you are held accountable.”

This remains an active investigation.
