Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office joins our military partners, first responders, families, and community in remembering nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives and honoring the courage of those who answered the call.
On September 11, 2001, firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, military members, and ordinary citizens responded with extraordinary courage as our nation faced an unprecedented attack. Many ran toward danger while others worked to protect, rescue, and comfort those in need.
“September 11 reminds us of the true meaning of duty,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “When the call comes, those who serve step forward. Whether protecting our community, responding to a crisis, or defending our nation thousands of miles from home, our first responders and military members share a common commitment to something greater than themselves.”
The Sheriff’s Office also recognizes the families who carried the weight of loss, deployments, uncertainty, and sacrifice in the years following September 11. Their sacrifices remain an enduring part of the legacy of those who served.
The connection between military members and first responders remains strong in the Pikes Peak region, where these professions work alongside one another to protect the community and uphold the freedoms entrusted to them.
Twenty-five years later, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office encourages the community to remember not only the lives lost on September 11, but also the courage, unity and service demonstrated in the days, months and years which followed.
“We must never take our freedom for granted,” Sheriff Roybal said. “May we continue to support those who serve, stand beside their families, and remain worthy of the sacrifices made on our behalf. May we never forget those we lost, always honor those who served, and remain steadfast in protecting our communities, our nation, and the freedoms entrusted to our care.”
