Update: Individual Involved in Critical Incident at El Paso County Jail, Dies

On September 11, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., during a routine welfare check at the El Paso County Jail, deputies found an adult male unresponsive in his cell.

Evidence found during a search of the cell suggests the person in custody had attempted to take his own life.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies and medical staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures until responders from the American Medical Response (AMR) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived at approximately 8:32 p.m. and assumed medical care.

At approximately 9:22 p.m., the individual was transferred (via AMR) to a local hospital.

Despite efforts and the highest level of care by medical professionals at the hospital, the individual passed away at approximately 5:35 p.m. today, September 15, 2024.

Our Office wishes to express our deepest condolences to this individual’s family.

Sheriff Roybal has ordered an in-depth investigation of the incident. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division will conduct this investigation adhering to the same standards we provide to citizens not in custody.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Office will provide updates and additional information as appropriate regarding this incident.
