Body of Missing New Hampshire Hiker Located Near Summit of Pikes Peak

On June 13, 2025, the El Paso County and Teller County Sheriff’s Offices launched a joint investigation and search operation for missing hiker, 55-year-old Russell Hardy.

Mr. Hardy arrived in Colorado Springs from New Hampshire on June 10, 2025, with plans to hike and explore Pikes Peak. He rented a gray 2025 Toyota RAV4 and was scheduled to return home by June 12.

When Mr. Hardy failed to return and could not be reached, his family reported him missing on June 13. Deputies from both Sheriff’s Offices initiated an investigation.

License plate readers from Flock Safety cameras captured activity from his rental vehicle during the early morning hours of June 11.

Additionally, a social media post placed Mr. Hardy near the Crags Trailhead in Teller County the same day.

Since June 13, Search and Rescue teams and law enforcement from both counties have collaborated in the surrounding wilderness, utilizing drones and K-9 teams to support search efforts.

His vehicle was soon located at the trailhead, and hikers reported seeing him in the area around 10:15 a.m.

Yesterday afternoon, around noon, a hiker discovered the body of a deceased individual matching Mr. Hardy’s description near the summit of Pikes Peak in El Paso County. While there is no indication of foul play, this appears to be a tragic outcome of a man confronting the challenges of nature.

“Our deepest condolences are with Mr. Hardy’s family during this difficult time,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “Although this is not the outcome anyone hoped for, the dedication shown by everyone involved remains deeply appreciated. Over 100 volunteers from agencies across the Pikes Peak region assisted in the search, braving varying weather conditions and challenging terrain in the mission.

“On behalf of myself and Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all deputies, volunteers, rangers, and support personnel who committed themselves to this effort.”

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will confirm the individual’s identity and determine the cause of death.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident and will release any further updates as necessary.
