Colorado 150th Day

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Celebrates 150 Years of Colorado History and Service to the People of Colorado

As the State of Colorado commemorates its 150th anniversary, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office proudly honors a legacy of public service which began before Colorado became a state and continues today through its unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the people of Colorado.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office traces its roots to 1861, when El Paso County was established as one of the original counties of the Colorado Territory. Long before Colorado achieved statehood in 1876, the men and women who served as sheriffs of El Paso County stood as guardians of law and order during a formative period of western expansion, helping build safer communities and supporting the growth of a new territory.

For 150 years, Colorado’s story has been shaped by courage, perseverance, and a commitment to community. The history of El Paso County is deeply connected to this story. From the earliest days of territorial government, through decades of growth and transformation, to today’s complex public safety challenges, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has remained dedicated to serving residents, visitors, and future generations.

Throughout this proud history, members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office have answered the call to serve with courage and sacrifice. Six deputies who donned the badge of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives in the line of duty while protecting the people of Colorado. Their bravery, dedication, and commitment to public safety are forever woven into the history of this Office and serve as a lasting reminder of the risks embraced by those who choose a life of service.

Today, El Paso County is the most populous county in Colorado, spanning 2,130 square miles and serving more than 750,000 residents across a diverse and rapidly growing region. The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for providing public safety services across more than 2,100 miles of county roads, totaling more than 4,400 lane miles of public roadway when accounting for all lanes of travel. These transportation corridors connect communities throughout the Pikes Peak region and represent one of the many responsibilities entrusted to the Sheriff’s Office.

El Paso County is also home to the largest single free-standing county jail in Colorado, where dedicated professionals provide safe and secure operations while supporting rehabilitation, behavioral health initiatives, and programs designed to help individuals successfully transition back into the community.

“Today, as Colorado celebrates 150 years of statehood, we recognize the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has been part of Colorado’s story since its earliest days,” stated the 29th Sheriff of El Paso County, Joseph Roybal. “It is a privilege to serve the citizens of this county and to continue the tradition of protecting our communities with dedication, integrity, and professionalism. The responsibility entrusted to us by generations before us is one we proudly carry forward for those who will follow.”

Today, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office continues this tradition through modern public safety initiatives, including:

  • Community partnerships and outreach programs;
  • Professional training and leadership development;
  • Emergency response, public safety, and detention operations;
  • Support for victims, families, and vulnerable members of the community;
  • Innovative approaches to law enforcement and service.

As Colorado celebrates 150 years of statehood, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office recognizes its history is inseparable from the history of the state it serves. Generations of sheriffs, deputies, professional staff, and community members have contributed to building a safer and stronger Colorado.

“From our earliest days as a territorial county to the present day, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has been honored to serve the people of Colorado,” said Sheriff Roybal. “This anniversary is not only a celebration of our past, but also a commitment to continuing our mission of service for the generations who will follow.”

For 150 years, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has stood alongside the people of Colorado—protecting communities, responding to challenges, honoring those who came before us, and carrying forward a proud tradition of service, honor, and dedication.
