El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Seeks Information in 1988 Cold Case Homicide of Towana Lewis

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in solving the 1988 murder of 17-year-old Towana Lewis.

On Sunday, September 11, 1988, Towana’s body was discovered in an agricultural irrigation ditch near Goldfield Drive and the Big Johnson Reservoir, located in the Widefield area of unincorporated El Paso County.

An autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner determined she died by strangulation.

Towana was known to spend time at Prospect Lake Park and was reportedly seen there in the days leading up to her death.

She was last seen alive on either September 9 or 10, 1988.

Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who knew Sergeant Darwyn H. Jones, a former soldier stationed at Fort Carson. Although Sgt. Jones is now deceased; he was acquainted with Towana and may have had information about her activities prior to her death.

At the time, Sgt. Jones was a tank turret mechanic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment. He served there from February 1986 through July 1989.

If you have any information about this case, Towana Lewis, or Sgt. Darwyn Jones, please contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at (719) 520-7777.

Even seemingly minor details could help bring closure to this decades-old case.
