Human Remains Discovered in Security-Widefield Residence Linked to 2024 Missing Person Case

On August 11, 2025, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center received a call reporting the discovery of a deceased individual in the attic of a residence in the 4300 block of McGrew Circle in the Security-Widefield area of unincorporated El Paso County.

The individual was found by contractors conducting a mold inspection at the property. This residence had previously been connected to a missing person investigation initiated in December 2024, when 41-year-old Rueben Matthews was reported missing after leaving his home.

Despite several searches of the surrounding area, including an extensive area search with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit, as well as several locations Mr. Matthews was known to frequent, deputies were unable to locate Mr. Matthews.

Based on physical characteristics and other evidence at the scene, investigators believe the remains are those of Mr. Matthews. Positive identification, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Currently, this is an active and ongoing investigation. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Matthews’ family and friends during this difficult time.
