Road Rage Incident Involving Pepper Ball Gun Under Investigation

On August 2, 2026, at approximately 9:53 AM, an adult male entered the El Paso County Jail lobby and informed front desk staff he had been shot while driving near the intersection of Highway 85-87 and Las Vegas Street, near the El Paso County Jail.

The victim was alert, communicating clearly, and had an apparent injury to the head.

Deputies assigned to the jail, along with medical staff, immediately began rendering aid and notified the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center.

Patrol deputies responded, along with emergency personnel from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and American Medical Response (AMR).

The victim told deputies they had been driving a vehicle on East Las Vegas Street when they were struck by a projectile fired by an unknown adult male riding a bicycle with a weapon.

At approximately 10:05 AM, personnel from the Colorado Springs Fire Department and American Medical Response transported the victim to a local hospital, where they were treated for a non-life-threatening head injury.

Deputies established a perimeter and, working alongside the Colorado Springs Police Department, conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area using both ground resources and a Drone as a First Responder (DFR) from the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The suspect is described as an approximately 50-year-old white male with a beard and glasses, wearing a white shirt and gray shorts, and riding a mountain bike.

The preliminary investigation determined the incident stemmed from a road rage encounter. Investigators learned the suspect rode out of a wooded area into the victim’s path, causing the victim to brake suddenly to avoid a collision. During the encounter, the suspect fired a weapon (determined to be a pepper ball gun), striking the victim in the head.

Law enforcement personnel searched the surrounding area, including the nearby creek bed and other uninhabited areas, but the suspect was not located.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the Colorado Springs Fire Department, and American Medical Response for their rapid response and outstanding partnership. Their coordinated efforts ensured the victim received immediate medical care, the area was quickly secured, and resources were deployed without delay.

As a precautionary measure, the El Paso County Jail was placed in a temporary lockdown to ensure the safety of employees and incarcerated citizens while deputies assessed the situation.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who was in the area of Highway 85-87 and East Las Vegas Street around 9:50 AM on August 2, 2026, and may have witnessed the incident or captured video footage, to contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 719-520-7777.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
