Sheriff’s Office Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near North Academy Blvd and East San Miguel Street

On April 4, 2026, at approximately 10:57 PM, a Metro Task Force composed of officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) and a deputy from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) were conducting proactive enforcement in the 1200 block of North Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs.

While in the area, the Task Force observed a suspicious vehicle occupied by an adult female and an adult male driver, who was known to law enforcement.

After making contact with the vehicle and identifying themselves as law enforcement, the adult male driver attempted to flee from officers. While attempting to flee, the vehicle became high-centered, rendering it immobile.

Officers issued multiple verbal commands for the occupants to exit the vehicle.

The female passenger exited the vehicle and was detained. The male suspect refused to comply with the officers’ commands and fired at least one shot toward Task Force members.

In response, three Colorado Springs Police Department officers each fired at least one round from their duty weapons.   The suspect was struck during this exchange. Officers then removed the male suspect from the vehicle and rendered medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputy did not discharge their weapon.

The male suspect, identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office as 40-year-old Benjamin Greenfield, was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

No other members of the community or law enforcement were injured during this incident.

The female passenger’s involvement in this incident remains under investigation. However, she was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on an outstanding warrant unrelated to this incident.

A firearm was recovered in the suspect’s vehicle.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. The CSPD officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave per CSPD’s policy.

This is an ongoing investigation, and information regarding the incident will be released from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Office as appropriate.
