Update: Off-Duty K9 Styx Involved in Incident; Investigation Underway

On August 8, 2026, at approximately 12:34 PM, a call was received by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center reporting an unknown dog had attacked the caller’s dog and bitten the caller. The caller reported they had shot the dog with a firearm.

The caller was located at a residence in the 8900 block of Royal Melbourne Circle in the Falcon area of unincorporated El Paso County.

Before deputies arrived, they were notified by an off-duty K9 deputy the dog involved in the incident was El Paso County Sheriff’s Office K9 Styx.

Patrol deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded, along with medical personnel from the Falcon Fire Department and Black Forest Fire Department.

An adult male was located at the scene and had sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene by medical personnel and later traveled to a local urgent care facility for additional treatment.

K9 Styx was transported to a local veterinary hospital for treatment; however, he did not survive his injuries.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as appropriate.
