Nevada Avenue Officer Involved Shooting Update

On Monday, March 31, 2025, at approximately 2:21 pm, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call for service regarding an adult male breaking into vehicles and threatening a community member with a firearm in a parking lot near 21 North Nevada Avenue in downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado.

CSPD Patrol Officers from the Gold Hill Division responded to the scene and located the suspect inside a vehicle. Officers attempted to contact the suspect and take him into custody. However, the suspect was non-compliant.

The suspect exited the vehicle with the firearm, at which time one CSPD Officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect.

CSPD Officers rendered emergency aid until medical personnel arrived on the scene and declared the suspect deceased.

No other members of the community or law enforcement were injured during this incident.

Investigators recovered a firearm on the scene.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has positively identified the deceased as 38-year-old Nathaniel Altman. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Coroner’s Office.

In accordance with Colorado state law, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting.  This is an ongoing investigation, and information regarding the incident will be released as appropriate.
