El Paso County Deputies Arrest Armed Suspect After Violent Confrontation

On July 4, 2026, at approximately 7:30 PM, a call was received by the El Paso County Regional Communications Center reporting that an individual identified as 51-year-old Garrett Duffy had threatened another person with a handgun, fired several rounds, and fled the scene of a residence located in the 8500 block of Aspenglow Lane in the Cascade area of unincorporated El Paso County.

The victim, who was known to the suspect, advised Duffy had likely driven to a location on South Willow Street in Woodland Park.

Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and located Duffy. When deputies attempted to make contact, Duffy exited the residence carrying a hunting rifle. Deputies issued multiple commands for Duffy to drop the weapon; however, he refused and aggressively approached deputies while swinging the rifle.

Duffy eventually dropped the rifle and a handgun in his possession, but continued to advance. A physical struggle ensued between deputies and Duffy, during which Duffy attempted to disarm one of the deputies. He was taken to the ground and placed into custody without further incident.

Members of the Northeast Teller County Fire, Ute Pass Regional Ambulance District,  and the Woodland Park Police Department assisted at the scene.

Garrett Duffy was transported to a local hospital prior to being booked into the El Paso County Jail. He is facing charges including Menacing with a Real or Simulated Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Second-Degree Assault. He was released on a $ 10,000 bond, the standard amount set by Colorado statute.

“This incident demonstrates the dangerous and unpredictable situations our deputies face while protecting this community,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “I am grateful for the professionalism, restraint, and teamwork displayed by responding deputies and our partner agencies, which helped bring this situation to a safe resolution. I also want to thank the Woodland Park Fire Department and the Woodland Park Police Department for their quick response and continued support during this incident.”
