Sheriff’s Deputies Intercept Wrong-Way Vehicle on I-25

At approximately 3:30 AM on February 22, 2026, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center received multiple calls from motorists reporting a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 25 (near Exit 128) in Fountain, Colorado.

Upon arriving, a Sheriff’s Office Patrol deputy located the suspect vehicle near mile marker 133, approximately two miles south of the South Academy Boulevard exit, where the vehicle continued to travel northbound in the southbound lanes.

The deputy activated emergency lights to warn southbound motorists of the potential danger. As the deputy caught up to the suspect, they attempted a traffic stop; the driver did not stop.

While continuing efforts to pull over the suspect vehicle, deputies observed other vehicles approaching from the south and recognized the significant risk of a head-on collision at highway speeds. Due to the potential severity of these circumstances, the deputy used his patrol vehicle to force the suspect vehicle into the center median.

No one was injured during the contact.

Additional units from the Colorado State Patrol and El Paso County Sheriff’s Office arrived, and the driver, 42-year-old Gloria Ramos Pena, was taken into custody.

Ramos Pena was arrested on the following charges:

  • Felony Vehicular Eluding
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Driving Under the Influence Per-Se
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Reckless Driving
  • License for Drivers (driving without a license)
  • and multiple other traffic-related offenses

She was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
